Gather together for theatre under the stars for Flow, a free outdoor event celebrating kinship, culture and connection, presented by NORPA at the Maclean Showgrounds November 16-17, 2023.

Flow is a powerful First Nations story, both contemporary and ancient, that creates space for reflection and understanding of our river systems. Set on an incredible outdoor stage it’s part music concert, part theatre, and presented in NORPA’s ambitious style. 

Told through dance, poetry, video projection, spoken word and music, Flow transports us down the river, from Bundjalung country to Yaegl country. Inspired by the first native title claim on a body of water, it’s the tale of a man’s search to discover more about his story, his culture and the region’s history. 

Yaegl Bundjalung man Mitch King is joined on stage by sound artist Blake Rhodes, and directed by Jade Dewi Tyas Tunggal. Together they journey to find identity in music, urban culture and nature. Guided by the voices of elders, custodians and young people, they explore the living traditions held in local ancestral lands and discover the cultural significance of the waters that flow through our region.

“The mighty Clarence River, Biirrinba, is at the heart of Flow,” says Mitch King “It’s what we Yaegl people always return to — swimming, fishing, hanging out on the river and learning ancestor stories about its creation. It’s about me as an adult coming back and connecting with the river in my own way. When I see the river, I’m home." 

Yaegl Elders and emerging leaders generously share their knowledge in Flow, including acclaimed Yaegl artist Frances Belle Parker whose artwork is featured in the beautiful video and set design created by Mic Gruchy.

“Flow is enabling the continuance of our oral storytelling that has mapped our country and provided knowledge for eons,” says Rhoda Roberts, Creative Director First Nations at NORPA. “Mitch King retells the creation story of the rivers with the Dirrangan story. It is a stark warning of the nature of greed and how important water preservation is for a better tomorrow.” 

NORPA proudly presents Flow as a free outdoor event held in two stunning locations — by the river at Maclean Showground (16-17 Nov) and in the heart of Lismore at The Quad (23-25 Nov). The evening will also feature a pre-show guest performance by local musicians. 

Everyone is welcome for this all-ages theatre concert. Grab a picnic blanket and settle in for an unforgettable evening with family, friends, and community. Please note Flow is an alcohol free event.
