Own your piece of Grafton summer history

Clarence Valley residents have a rare opportunity to own a unique piece of local history when items from the old Grafton Olympic Pool go up for auction next week.

The items will be available for inspection at the site tomorrow, May 31 — check out the items available and lodge your bid here.

Items going under the hammer for the online auction from 3-6 June include starting blocks, diving boards, a 3000-litre water tank seat, fibreglass umbrellas, change room cubicles, fencing, cupboards, bathroom fittings and much more.

The items have been salvaged prior to demolition of the old pool to make way for a brand new aquatic centre at the site on the corner of Turf and Oliver streets.

"We have identified and removed a range of infrastructure which either holds monetary or sentimental value to reduce the impact on the environment," explains Clarence Valley Council Manager Open Spaces and Facilities Peter Birch. "We would like to see these items reused and repurposed rather than disposed of.”

Clarence Valley Council General Manager Laura Black said the auction was a great opportunity to pick up a bargain on a unique piece of history.

“The Grafton pool has been a central part of the lives of local residents for many decades," he says. "The pool was first opened in 1956 to ensure local kids had a safe place to learn to swim. Now, locals have the chance to own a piece of this history.”

Items up for auction include diving boards, fibreglass umbrellas, starting blocks, and this 3,000-litre Seat Water Tank.

Grafton’s ageing public pool is getting ready for a makeover — watch the vision for the new aquatic centre come to life below.
